His honest face, as he looked at me with a serio-comic shake of his head, impresses me more in the remembrance than it did in the reality, for I was by this time in a state of such excessive trepidation and wandering of mind, as to be quite unable to fix my attention on anything. On our approaching the house where the Misses Spenlow lived, I was at such a discount in respect of my personal looks and presence of mind, that Traddles proposed a gentle stimulant in the form of a glass of ale. This having been administered at a neighbouring public-house, he conducted me, with tottering steps, to the Misses Spenlow's door. ¡¡¡¡I had a vague sensation of being,
as it were, on view, when the maid opened it; and of wavering, somehow, across a hall with a weather-glass in it, into a quiet little drawing-room on the ground-floor, commanding a neat garden. Also of sitting down here, on a sofa, and seeing Traddles's hair start up, now his hat was removed, like one of those obtrusive little figures made of springs, that fly out of fictitious snuff-boxes when the lid is taken off. Also of hearing an old-fashioned clock ticking away on the chimney-piece, and trying to make it keep time to the jerking of my heart, - which it wouldn't. Also of looking round the room for any sign of Dora, and seeing

I passed my evenings with Mr. and Mrs. Micawber, during the remaining term of our residence under the same roof; and I think we became fonder of one another as the time went on. On the last Sunday, they invited me to dinner; and we had a loin of pork and apple sauce, and a pudding. I had bought a spotted wooden horse over-night as a parting gift to little Wilkins Micawber - that was the boy - and a doll for little Emma. I had also bestowed a shilling on the Orfling,
was about to be disbanded. ¡¡¡¡We had a very pleasant day, though we were all in a tender state about our approaching separation. ¡¡¡¡'I shall never, Master Copperfield,' said Mrs. Micawber, 'revert to the period when Mr. Micawber was in difficulties, without thinking of you. Your conduct has always been of the most delicate and obliging description. You have never been a lodger. You have been a friend.'

It was a happy circumstance for me that Traddles came back first. He enjoyed my placard so much, that he saved me from the embarrassment of either disclosure or concealment, by presenting me to every other boy who came back, great or small, immediately on his arrival, in this form of introduction, 'Look here! Here's a game!'
, too, the greater part of the boys came back low-spirited, and were not so boisterous at my expense as I had expected. Some of them certainly did dance about me like wild Indians, and the greater part could not resist the temptation of pretending that I was a dog, and patting and soothing me, lest I should bite, and saying, 'Lie down, sir!' and calling me Towzer. This was naturally confusing, among so many strangers, and cost me some tears, but on the whole it was much better than I had anticipated. ¡¡¡¡I was not considered as being formally received into the school, however, until J. Steerforth arrived. Before this boy, who was reputed to be a great

"Well –” saidFather, slightly dazed.
"I'm putting it badly,"said Miss Marple, "but I mean people likeCanon Pennyfather, if they say they're going somewhere on aThursday, one is quite prepared to find that they didn't meanThursday, it may be Wednesday or Friday they really mean. Usually they find out in timebut sometimes they just don't. I thought at the time thatsomething like that must have happened."
Father looked slightly puzzled.
"You speak as though you knew already, MissMarple, that Canon Pennyfather hadn't gone to Lucerne."
"I knew he wasn't inLucerne on Thursday," said Miss Marple. "He was here all day – or most of the day. That's why I thought, of course, that though he may have said Thursday to me, itwas really Friday he meant. He certainly left here on Thursday evening carrying he B.E.A.bag."

"Bad crash ahead….Goods train detailed…”
The engine driver looked out of his cab, thenclimbed down also to join the others.
At the rear of the train, six men who had justclimbed up the embankment boarded the train through a door left open for them in the lastcoach. Six passengers from different coaches met them. With well-rehearsed speed, theyproceeded to take charge of the postal van, isolating it from the rest of the train. Twomen in Balaclava helmets at front and rear of the compartment stood on guard, coshes inhand.
A man in railway uniform went forward along thecorridor of the stationary train, uttering explanations to such as demanded them."Block on the line ahead. Ten minutes' delay, maybe, not much more…." It sounded friendly and reassuring.

had outlived most of hercontemporaries. But she still sat and remembered. In a queer way, it made her come to lifeagain – Jane Marple, that pink and white eager young girl…. Such a silly girl in many ways… now who wasthat very unsuitable young man whose name – oh dear, shecouldn't even remember it now! How wise her mother had been tonip that friendship so firmly in the bud. She had come across him years later – and really he was quite dreadful! At the time she had cried herself to sleepfor at least a week!
Nowadays, of course – sheconsidered nowadays…. These poor young things. Some of themhad mothers, but never mothers who seemed to be any good – motherswho were quite incapable of protecting their daughters from silly affairs, illegitimatebabies, and early and unfortunate marriages. It was all very sad.

Well, what did he say?" Han shouted with some concern. Threepio wilted with chagrin. "I'm rather embarrassed, Captain Solo, but itappears you are to be the main course at a banquet in my honor. He is quiteoffended that I should suggest otherwise." Before another word could be said, log-drums began beating in ominoussyncopation. As one, all the furry heads turned toward the mouth of the large hut.Out of it came Wicket; and behind him, Chief Chirpa. Chirpa was gray of fur, strong of will. On his head he bore a garland woven ofleaves, teeth, and the horns of great animals he'd bested in the hunt. In his righthand he carried a staff fashioned from the longbone of a flying reptile; in his left heheld an iguana, who was his pet and advisor. He surveyed the scene in the square at a glance, then turned to wait for the guestwho was only now emerging from the large hut behind him.
